This going to be a series of short analyses breaking down what is chemistry and how NaLu fits this concept so well that it stands out from other premises
So, what is Emotional Chemistry?
Let us start by explaining what chemistry isn’t. Emotional chemistry is not about having the same interests or some superficial things in common. It’s not about finding someone sexy or attractive. Chemistry is not something that shallow, it’s actually something deeper.
Then, what is chemistry about?
Chemistry is about developing an emotional connection that grows naturally, with the core components of this concept revolving around mutual trust/faith, support, and a desire to get closer to someone, all resulting in a remarkable emotional attachment. True chemistry occurs when characters can affect each other in a meaningful way.
Does NaLu fit any of these elements? Let’s take a look at one of the many moments that prove it does:
“Let’s save the tears for when we win”
When Lucy broke down after losing to Flare, Natsu walks to her and reassures her she did an awesome there, that she proved they could handle the challenge that time period could throw at them. Natsu gave her emotional support when she needed it!
This gesture had a noticeable effect on Lucy as later that night we see her in higher spirits and she sticks to Natsu’s side during the guild’s party. This was possible because their previous interactions built up a strong and mutual faith/trust that allowed them to create a positive feedback loop that makes each other feel better. It’s not something explicitly romantic, but it’s still a clear showing of the elements needed to solidify a relationship.
That’s what true chemistry looks like, something that NaLu, through a long chain of moments, displays multiple times.
